I am not a doctor. I am not a nutritionist. I am not a dietician. I am not a tax-preparer, a lawyer, a scientist, a phlebotomist, a bassoonist, a balloonist or a cop. If you need medical or nutritional advice, please seek it out from a qualified professional. Because that's not me -- I am simply a curious and opinionated woman who loves butter.

Welcome to Nourish D.C. I started this blog as a resource both for myself and for others who live in the D.C. area and are interested in improving their health through food.

I am a journalist, a wife, a mother. I am in pretty good health but have had a few bouts with health problems that have led me to examine and try to change what I eat. I have experimented in the past with being a vegetarian, a partial vegetarian, a vegan (that was short-lived) and going gluten-free. All in search of optimal health.

During my bouts with illhealth, none of my doctors ever suggested I examine what I was putting into my body, even when my problems were digestive! The first thing that really started me on the course of taking my health into my own hands was my struggle with endometriosis. I ordered the book Endometriosis:A Key to Healing Through Nutrition in my late-20s after years of pain and slowly began to digest the reality that what I ate could be affecting my health. It sounds so simple, but it literally took years to sink in.

During more recent research into thyroid issues, I kept coming across two things: the Paleo diet and the cookbook Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon — both of these really opened my eyes about cooking and nutrition. After a lot of reading, I now know that so much of what we accept as nutritional gospel is in fact wrong. I no longer blindly believe what “experts” and “officials” proclaim about food — such as fat makes you fat. I now see how so many factors influence our dietary beliefs — from greed to complacency to sheer trendiness.

I wish I knew then what I know now. So in that spirit, I hope to offer what I do know, help guide people to the resources they need to eat better and to hear from and learn from others who are on the same journey.

Please feel free to contact me below.

Cheers, Aggie
